Christopher Nolan’s latest epic, The Odyssey, is not only captivating moviegoers but also breathing new life into a classic video game. Since the film’s release, Ubisoft’s 2018 RPG Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has seen a remarkable resurgence in player activity across all platforms, with the most dramatic spike on Xbox.
According to analytics firm Alinea Analytics, the Xbox player count jumped by 134%, climbing from 36,000 to 84,000 daily active users. Analyst Rhys Elliot noted, “The film didn’t make millions buy an eight-year-old game, but it got a massive cohort playing it again. That data gives Ubisoft great ammunition for an eventual AC Odyssey Resynced.”
This trend echoes similar cross-media boosts seen in recent years, such as Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners reviving Cyberpunk 2077, and the HBO series The Last of Us driving players back to the original game. The shared setting of ancient Greece and Homer’s story in both the film and the game appears to be the key driver, prompting both new players and returning veterans to explore the world of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
For Ubisoft, this renewed interest arrives without any new expansion or major update—a testament to the power of quality film adaptations in boosting legacy game titles.
