YouTube creator Hank Green has publicly apologized for his heavy reliance on AI tools for research, following backlash from fans who questioned the authenticity of his content. In a candid Reddit post, Green admitted that using ChatGPT to locate academic papers and resources had become an unhealthy habit, impacting his creative process and connection with his audience.
The controversy began when viewers of a recent Complexly video noticed phrasing that resembled chatbot language. Green clarified that ChatGPT did not write any claims or opinions in his videos; it was solely used as a research aid to find sources faster during busy production periods. However, he acknowledged that the practice had gone too far. “I have been relying too heavily on AI as a research aid,” Green wrote, adding that the tool gave him a dopamine rush while helping him work faster.
In response, Green announced significant changes to his content schedule across multiple channels. He plans to reduce the number of videos on Hankschannel and may pause uploads for a time. Both SciShow and Crash Course will see fewer videos as he revamps his workflow. Additionally, Green will pause his daily word games, SMUSH and 4×3, during this period. Moving forward, he intends to produce more unscripted, personal content and spend more time on authentic engagement with his viewers.
The incident adds to broader concerns about AI use among online creators. Green remains open to AI technology but now emphasizes the need for a clearer and more careful approach, ensuring fans can always distinguish between his own thoughts and AI-assisted research.
