Classic Sci-Fi Anime Galaxy Express 999 Returns With New Theatrical Film After Nearly 50 Years

Nearly five decades after its original debut, the legendary space opera Galaxy Express 999 is set to return with a brand-new theatrical anime film. Created by the late Leiji Matsumoto, the series remains one of the most influential sci-fi classics in anime history, celebrated for its emotional depth and philosophical storytelling.

Animation production will be handled by Toei Animation, the same studio behind the original 1978 series, which is marking its 70th anniversary. The studio confirmed that veteran filmmaker Rintaro, who directed the iconic 1979 Galaxy Express 999 feature film, is returning to provide the story concept for the new project.

The story follows young Tetsuro Hoshino and the mysterious Maetel as they journey across the galaxy aboard the titular train, exploring themes of mortality, humanity, loneliness, and hope. The announcement fulfills one of Leiji Matsumoto’s longtime dreams, according to his daughter Makiko Matsumoto, who shared the emotional update with fans.

In addition to the film, two special exhibitions are planned in Japan during 2026, showcasing Galaxy Express 999 alongside more than 300 original works by Leiji Matsumoto. Several key details remain under wraps, including the release date, voice cast, and director—but the revival has already been hailed as one of the most anticipated anime returns in decades.
