  • Airtel, Jio, and Vi Ordered to Launch Voice-Only Recharge Plans Under New TRAI Rules

Airtel, Jio, and Vi Ordered to Launch Voice-Only Recharge Plans Under New TRAI Rules

    TRAI Tightens Recharge Plan Requirements

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea to broaden their voice- and SMS-only recharge offerings. The new rules require telecom operators to provide calling- and messaging-only plans across shorter validity periods, giving customers who do not need mobile data more flexible options.

The amended regulations take effect on October 21, 2026, after being officially notified on September 21. Under the framework, operators must offer voice-and-SMS-only options for validity periods of 30 days or less wherever comparable combined voice, SMS, and data plans exist.

    What Telecom Companies Must Do

    • Offer voice-and-SMS-only Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) for validity periods of up to 30 days.
    • Provide a monthly plan that renews on the same date each month, or on the last day of the month when that date does not exist.
    • Introduce at least one longer-validity voice-and-SMS-only plan that matches existing long-duration data-inclusive offerings.

Why TRAI Is Expanding Voice-Only Plans

TRAI had earlier asked operators to offer at least one voice-and-SMS-only STV, but these plans were mostly concentrated around longer validity periods. That left limited choices for consumers who rely on basic phones, use Wi-Fi for data, keep a secondary SIM, or simply prefer not to pay for mobile internet.

The regulator argues that these users should be able to pay only for the services they actually use. The consultation for the latest amendment drew 1,132 responses from telecom operators, industry bodies, consumer groups, and other stakeholders, followed by an Open House Discussion on June 15, 2026.

    Operator Concerns and Pricing Outlook

Major telecom providers opposed the expanded mandate during consultations. Reliance Jio argued that existing tariff options were already sufficient and questioned the need for separate plans for every validity period.

TRAI has not yet announced specific pricing for the new voice- and SMS-only plans. Instead, it has provided guidance for operators to adjust tariffs to reflect the removal of data, leaving room for market-driven pricing.

  • Reliance Jio September 2026 Prepaid Plans: Full Breakdown of Pricing, Data, and 5G Benefits

Reliance Jio September 2026 Prepaid Plans: Full Breakdown of Pricing, Data, and 5G Benefits

Reliance Jio continues to offer a diverse range of prepaid recharge plans in September 2026, catering to everyone from light users to heavy data consumers. The lineup spans short-validity data top-ups starting at ₹11 to a long-term annual plan priced at ₹3,599. Users can recharge through the MyJio app, the Jio.com website, or third-party platforms like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay.

Since Jio splits its plans into base recharges and data-only add-ons, it’s important to check whether an existing base plan is active before purchasing to avoid overlapping benefits.

Jio Plans by Price and Data Needs

At the entry level, the ₹199 plan offers a mid-range option with daily data and unlimited calling, making it a popular choice for regular users. For those needing higher data limits, plans in the ₹299 to ₹349 range typically provide 2GB to 2.5GB of high-speed data per day, along with unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS daily.

Jio’s flagship annual plan at ₹3,599 covers a full 365 days of validity, offering 2.5GB of daily high-speed data, unlimited 5G access for eligible users, unlimited calls, and SMS. This plan is the most economical for anyone looking to avoid monthly recharges.

Jio also sells a ₹601 unlimited 5G voucher for users already on an eligible base plan with at least 1.5GB of daily 4G data. Activating it increases the daily data quota to 3GB and unlocks unlimited 5G speeds for the voucher’s validity period. The voucher comes bundled with 12 upgrade vouchers, each valid for up to 30 days, giving users flexibility to activate them anytime across a 12-month window.

Jio Data Add-Ons and 5G Vouchers

For users who only need extra data without additional calling minutes, Jio’s data-only add-ons start at ₹11 for a small one-hour boost of 10GB, ideal for quick downloads. The ₹51 pack adds unlimited 5G along with 3GB of 4G data for plans valid up to a month, while the ₹101 and ₹151 packs scale up the 4G allowance to 6GB and 9GB respectively for longer base plan validities.

These add-ons require a compatible 5G device and network coverage to actually use the unlimited 5G benefit. Select long-validity plans also bundle OTT platform access, such as JioHotstar, giving users added entertainment value on top of their core data and calling benefits.

  • Vodafone Idea Secures $3.5B Loan from SBI-Led Consortium to Boost Network and Competitive Edge

Vodafone Idea Secures $3.5B Loan from SBI-Led Consortium to Boost Network and Competitive Edge

Vodafone Idea, India’s third-largest wireless operator, is set to receive a major financial boost. A consortium of banks led by State Bank of India (SBI) has approved approximately $3.5 billion in fresh debt financing. The funds are intended to support network upgrades and help the telecom operator strengthen its position against rivals Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio.

    Loan Terms and Conditions

Alongside SBI, Union Bank of India and the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) are part of the lending group. The loan has a tenure of nearly ten years and comes with specific conditions. One notable requirement is that Kumar Mangalam Birla must remain as chairman for the entire duration of the loan. The deal also includes repayment guarantees in case of default. Neither Vodafone Idea nor the banks have commented on the matter.

    Financial Strain and Government Support

The funding arrives after years of financial difficulty for Vodafone Idea, which has struggled to keep pace with competitors who have invested heavily in network expansion. In the quarter ending June, the company posted a loss of approximately Rs. 3,750 crore (USD 394 million), which was smaller than analysts had expected—a possible sign that its turnaround efforts are gaining traction.

Government intervention has also eased pressure. Authorities converted around Rs. 37,000 crore of the company’s dues into equity, raising the government’s stake to nearly 49 percent. Additionally, some past spectrum payments were capped, helping to relieve cash flow constraints.

    Path Forward

With this new debt, Vodafone Idea has a clearer path to invest in its network. The key question remains whether this investment will translate into subscriber growth in India’s intensely competitive telecom market. Rivals are not slowing down, and the coming years will determine if this funding leads to a genuine comeback or simply buys more time.

    Cross-Platform Compatibility Stands Out

The major upgrade in JioTag 2 is its support for both major smartphone ecosystems. Android users can connect via Google’s Find Hub network, while iPhone users can use Apple’s Find My service. This removes the platform limitation of the earlier model, making the tracker suitable for a much wider audience.

The tracker displays the location of connected items on a map through these networks, helping users locate misplaced belongings even beyond standard Bluetooth range. The large network of connected devices increases the chances of finding lost items in various locations.

    Loud Alert and Robust Build

JioTag 2 includes a 120 dB speaker that produces a loud alert, making it easy to find items in homes, offices, or crowded public spaces. The IP64 rating provides protection against dust and water splashes, ensuring reliable performance during daily outdoor use. The polycarbonate body keeps the device lightweight while maintaining strength.

    Design Refresh and Everyday Utility

Jio has refreshed the design with a cleaner, more compact appearance that is easy to carry. The tracker is ideal for locating keys, wallets, backpacks, handbags, and luggage. Travelers can attach it to luggage, students to backpacks, and office workers to laptop bags. Quick location access saves time and reduces stress during busy schedules.

Competitive Pricing in the Tracker Market

While premium trackers like Apple AirTag and Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 cost more, JioTag 2 enters the segment at a lower price while offering dual-platform support and essential features. This balance makes it attractive for buyers who want modern tracking functions without paying a premium.

The combination of dual-platform support, map-based tracking, a loud speaker, IP64 protection, and a compact design gives JioTag 2 a strong position in the affordable tracker category. The launch reflects Jio’s focus on delivering practical features that meet everyday needs while keeping costs accessible.

Reliance Jio has launched a new range of Jio Home Packs in India, combining broadband, live TV, and OTT streaming in one monthly subscription. The plans are aimed at households that want the flexibility of mixing internet with television, or simply want access to a large selection of channels without a Wi-Fi connection. What’s Included in Jio Home Packs?

Jio’s new home plans feature high-speed Wi-Fi through Jio’s fiber-delivered live connection, access to more than 1,000 live television channels, and subscriptions to 12+ OTT platforms, including Sun NXT, Zee5, SonyLIV, and JioHotstar.

The lineup includes three main packs:

Jio Home Packs vs. Airtel Xstream Fiber

Jio’s new offering competes directly with Airtel Xstream Fiber. Both providers bundle broadband, TV channels, and OTT content, but their pricing and included benefits differ. Jio enters the market with a Rs. 400 plan, positioning it as one of the more affordable bundled options available.

Airtel Xstream Fiber also includes OTT apps and high-speed internet, though the exact services vary by plan. Installation fees, internet speed, and premium OTT access differ between the two providers. Customers can choose based on price, local service quality, and the streaming apps they use most.

As competition in home broadband intensifies, bundled services like these could become the preferred choice for many Indian households.
