  • Airtel, Jio, and Vi Ordered to Launch Voice-Only Recharge Plans Under New TRAI Rules

Airtel, Jio, and Vi Ordered to Launch Voice-Only Recharge Plans Under New TRAI Rules

    TRAI Tightens Recharge Plan Requirements

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea to broaden their voice- and SMS-only recharge offerings. The new rules require telecom operators to provide calling- and messaging-only plans across shorter validity periods, giving customers who do not need mobile data more flexible options.

The amended regulations take effect on October 21, 2026, after being officially notified on September 21. Under the framework, operators must offer voice-and-SMS-only options for validity periods of 30 days or less wherever comparable combined voice, SMS, and data plans exist.

    What Telecom Companies Must Do

    • Offer voice-and-SMS-only Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) for validity periods of up to 30 days.
    • Provide a monthly plan that renews on the same date each month, or on the last day of the month when that date does not exist.
    • Introduce at least one longer-validity voice-and-SMS-only plan that matches existing long-duration data-inclusive offerings.

Why TRAI Is Expanding Voice-Only Plans

TRAI had earlier asked operators to offer at least one voice-and-SMS-only STV, but these plans were mostly concentrated around longer validity periods. That left limited choices for consumers who rely on basic phones, use Wi-Fi for data, keep a secondary SIM, or simply prefer not to pay for mobile internet.

The regulator argues that these users should be able to pay only for the services they actually use. The consultation for the latest amendment drew 1,132 responses from telecom operators, industry bodies, consumer groups, and other stakeholders, followed by an Open House Discussion on June 15, 2026.

    Operator Concerns and Pricing Outlook

Major telecom providers opposed the expanded mandate during consultations. Reliance Jio argued that existing tariff options were already sufficient and questioned the need for separate plans for every validity period.

TRAI has not yet announced specific pricing for the new voice- and SMS-only plans. Instead, it has provided guidance for operators to adjust tariffs to reflect the removal of data, leaving room for market-driven pricing.

  • TRAI Investigates Airtel and Jio Complaints Over Vodafone Idea’s Porting Incentives

TRAI Investigates Airtel and Jio Complaints Over Vodafone Idea’s Porting Incentives

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced it will review formal complaints filed by Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio against Vodafone Idea. The complaints allege that Vodafone Idea offered special tariff benefits to customers who port their mobile numbers from rival networks, a practice the complainants argue violates regulatory guidelines.

TRAI Chairman AK Lahoti confirmed on September 14 that the regulator received representations from the telecom operators and will examine the matter before deciding on further action. The regulator has not yet made any finding of wrongdoing against Vodafone Idea.

What Airtel and Jio Have Alleged

The core of the dispute centers on tariff benefits that were allegedly promoted exclusively for customers moving their numbers from Airtel or Jio to Vodafone Idea. Airtel and Jio contend that such offers incentivize switching and are not permitted under current rules. One complaint, sent to TRAI on September 2, explicitly asked the regulator to direct Vodafone Idea to cease promotional communications tied to these offers and to submit a compliance report confirming that all related advertisements, campaigns, and sales practices have been withdrawn.

The issue revolves around Mobile Number Portability (MNP), which allows users to change operators while keeping their existing numbers, making it easier for operators to target customers already on a rival network. TRAI has previously taken a stance against tariff benefits offered exclusively to porting-in customers, stating in an earlier order that such pricing could amount to discriminatory tariff treatment under Clause 10 of the Telecommunication Tariff Order, 1999.

    Vodafone Idea Responds

Vodafone Idea has denied any violation of rules. A company spokesperson said, “The company believes in fair competition and the strength of its products and the value delivered to customers, and that it conducts its business in compliance with the law.”

TRAI did not specify what action it may take next. Lahoti also did not indicate whether the regulator would seek additional information from Vodafone Idea or convene discussions with the three operators. The matter remains at the complaint and review stage, with no final determination made.

  • Apple Holds iPhone 18 Pro Discounts as Jio, Airtel, and Vi Stay Silent on Pre-Order Offers

Apple Holds iPhone 18 Pro Discounts as Jio, Airtel, and Vi Stay Silent on Pre-Order Offers

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max pre-orders are now live in India, but customers hoping for carrier deals from Jio, Airtel, or Vodafone Idea (Vi) will be disappointed — at least for now. None of the three telecom operators have listed any offers for Apple’s latest flagship models on their websites as of September 13, leaving Apple’s own discounts as the primary savings option.

When checking the homepages of Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vi, there were no promotions or banners related to the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max. Jio’s homepage highlighted its Rs. 3,599 annual plan, a Rs. 299 mobile plan, and JioHome services. Airtel promoted Wi-Fi, postpaid, prepaid, DTH, banking, and business services, while Vi’s homepage similarly showed no iPhone-related deals.

In contrast, Apple is offering up to Rs. 7,000 instant cashback on purchases made with eligible American Express, Axis Bank, or ICICI Bank cards, along with up to six months of No Cost EMI. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs. 1,64,900, and the Pro Max starts at Rs. 1,79,900.

This silence from Indian carriers stands in stark contrast to the U.S. market, where AT&T and Verizon are already promoting trade-in deals and credits for the new iPhones. However, Jio, Airtel, and Vi may still announce offers before the September 18 sale date. For now, the most attractive deals come directly from Apple, and buyers can choose between bank cashback and No Cost EMI instead of waiting for a telecom discount.

  • Vodafone Idea Secures $3.5B Loan from SBI-Led Consortium to Boost Network and Competitive Edge

Vodafone Idea Secures $3.5B Loan from SBI-Led Consortium to Boost Network and Competitive Edge

Vodafone Idea, India’s third-largest wireless operator, is set to receive a major financial boost. A consortium of banks led by State Bank of India (SBI) has approved approximately $3.5 billion in fresh debt financing. The funds are intended to support network upgrades and help the telecom operator strengthen its position against rivals Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio.

    Loan Terms and Conditions

Alongside SBI, Union Bank of India and the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) are part of the lending group. The loan has a tenure of nearly ten years and comes with specific conditions. One notable requirement is that Kumar Mangalam Birla must remain as chairman for the entire duration of the loan. The deal also includes repayment guarantees in case of default. Neither Vodafone Idea nor the banks have commented on the matter.

    Financial Strain and Government Support

The funding arrives after years of financial difficulty for Vodafone Idea, which has struggled to keep pace with competitors who have invested heavily in network expansion. In the quarter ending June, the company posted a loss of approximately Rs. 3,750 crore (USD 394 million), which was smaller than analysts had expected—a possible sign that its turnaround efforts are gaining traction.

Government intervention has also eased pressure. Authorities converted around Rs. 37,000 crore of the company’s dues into equity, raising the government’s stake to nearly 49 percent. Additionally, some past spectrum payments were capped, helping to relieve cash flow constraints.

    Path Forward

With this new debt, Vodafone Idea has a clearer path to invest in its network. The key question remains whether this investment will translate into subscriber growth in India’s intensely competitive telecom market. Rivals are not slowing down, and the coming years will determine if this funding leads to a genuine comeback or simply buys more time.

  • Vodafone Idea Stock at ₹14.21 as ₹35,000 Crore Loan Faces Lender Guarantee Demands

Vodafone Idea Stock at ₹14.21 as ₹35,000 Crore Loan Faces Lender Guarantee Demands

Vodafone Idea shares were trading at ₹14.21 on the NSE, hovering around ₹14.20 during Monday’s session, as investors closely tracked the telecom operator’s fundraising plans, improving financial performance, and the progress of its long-awaited turnaround strategy.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has begun showing early signs of operational recovery, reporting stronger revenue, improving cash generation, and higher customer monetization in FY26. The telecom operator has also unveiled an aggressive ₹45,000-crore capital expenditure plan aimed at expanding its 4G and 5G networks over the next few years.

However, the success of that strategy depends largely on securing a proposed ₹35,000-crore loan, with lenders reportedly seeking additional guarantees before extending fresh funding.

FY26 Financial Performance Reflects Gradual Improvement

According to Vodafone Idea, FY26 income is estimated at ₹44,873 crore, while Cash EBITDA is ₹9,217 crore, indicating an improvement in the company’s operational performance despite its large debt burden.

In Q4, the company recorded a 2.9% increase in revenue to ₹11,332 crore, while EBITDA grew 4.9% to ₹4,889 crore. Cash EBITDA rose by ₹2,432 crore, driven by increased consumer spending and greater use of data services.

    Subscriber Monetization Continues to Improve

Improving customer monetization performance has been one of the positives for Vodafone Idea. The company’s ARPU grew by 8.3% year-over-year to reach ₹190, driven by improved realization and increased demand for mobile data services. Daily data consumption over the network has jumped over 30% to 83 petabytes.

Vodafone Idea has added about 202,000 broadband towers to its network and brought in almost 129 million subscribers under its 4G and 5G networks. While the company holds a lower market share than some larger competitors, this trend is a positive sign for its financial health.

₹45,000 Crore Network Investment to Drive Growth

To strengthen its competitive position, Vodafone Idea has announced a ₹45,000 crore capital expenditure program through FY29. The funds will largely go toward boosting 4G availability and deploying 5G. The corporation is also investing in artificial intelligence-powered digital platforms to improve service delivery efficiency. Management believes such investments are crucial to improving network performance and retaining customers.

Lenders Seek Additional Guarantees for ₹35,000 Crore Loan

While Vodafone Idea’s operational performance has improved, its financing plans remain under scrutiny. A consortium of lenders led by the State Bank of India is evaluating the company’s proposal to raise ₹35,000 crore in funded debt, along with another ₹10,000 crore in non-funded credit facilities.

According to reports, banks have asked Vodafone Idea to moderate certain business projections and are also seeking a corporate guarantee from another Aditya Birla Group company before approving the loan. This added assurance should help reduce lending risks, given the telecom service provider’s debt burden and its obligation to make spectrum payments.

The funding plan has been deemed vital to implementing the company’s long-term network expansion strategy.

    Why Banks Are Being Cautious

Despite Vodafone Idea’s improving operational performance, lenders remain cautious because of the company’s substantial debt obligations and future spectrum payment liabilities. Banks want stronger financial backing before committing fresh capital, believing an additional corporate guarantee from the Aditya Birla Group would significantly improve credit comfort and reduce lending risk.

    Funding Remains the Biggest Catalyst

According to industry analysts, Vodafone Idea’s recovery from this point forward is likely to depend less on its operational efficiency and more on its capacity to raise funds. With additional capital in place, the telco can accelerate its network rollouts, enhance service quality, and become more competitive against rivals such as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

The timing of funding acquisition will directly impact progress in making planned investments and growing the subscriber base amid rapid 5G network growth in India’s telecommunications industry. Recent company performance provides grounds for investor confidence, but the success of the turnaround process ultimately depends on the availability of capital.

    Market Outlook

Even though Vodafone Idea has already achieved some success—with growing revenues, ARPU, and enhanced cash flow generation—the next stage of its recovery hinges on the decision regarding its proposed ₹35,000 crore financing package.
