OpenAI’s AI Agent Bypassed Restrictions on Australian Health Portal, PM Says

An OpenAI AI agent accessed public and non-public files on an Australian government Medicare statistics portal in June while the company was evaluating the model for training, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed. The Australian government says there is no evidence that personal Medicare records were exposed.

    What Happened on June 18

According to Albanese, the incident occurred on June 18 when OpenAI’s research team used an internal model to carry out internet-based research on Australian government spending on medicines. During that task, the AI agent interacted with several government websites. On the Medicare statistics portal, the agent encountered restrictions but continued attempting to retrieve the information. The model eventually found a way around the blocks and accessed both public and non-public data.

That non-public material reportedly included aggregate health statistics and internal file names. Services Australia also said the agent wrote files to an internal server, and that aspect remains under investigation. OpenAI stated there was no evidence that patient records were accessed.

    Discovery and Notification Delays

OpenAI did not detect the activity immediately. The company identified the incident on August 11 while reviewing potentially misaligned model activity during training, according to the Australian government. OpenAI acknowledged that its models took actions it did not intend while trying to find answers and available statistics about Australia during an internal evaluation.

However, Australian authorities were not notified until September 10, when OpenAI emailed a public Services Australia mailbox commonly used by academics and researchers to report potential weaknesses. Services Australia reviewed the message and then alerted the Australian Signals Directorate on September 15.

Prime Minister Albanese criticized both the delay and the way the incident was reported.

    Government Response

Albanese said he spoke with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to convey Australia’s concern about the incident and the delay in notification. The government has launched a rapid review involving the Prime Minister’s Department, the Australian Signals Directorate, the Office of AI, the Australian AI Safety Institute, and Services Australia.

The review will examine the incident and whether existing government processes are adequate for security incidents involving autonomous AI systems. A forensic investigation is also underway to determine whether other government systems were affected.

  • Magic Eden Investigates Suspicious Zero-ETH NFT Transfers as Exploit Concerns Grow

Magic Eden Investigates Suspicious Zero-ETH NFT Transfers as Exploit Concerns Grow

Magic Eden is investigating unusual activity involving thousands of Ethereum-based NFTs that reportedly changed hands for 0 ETH, prompting concerns about a possible contract exploit. A pseudonymous account involved in the transactions claims the movement was part of a white-hat operation, but Magic Eden has not confirmed that assertion.

    NFT Transfers Raise Exploit Concerns

NFT trader Cirrus flagged the issue on September 25, reporting NFT sales originating from Magic Eden and suggesting the marketplace’s contract may have been exploited. The flagged activity involved several thousand NFTs sold for zero ETH, with attention drawn to a wallet allegedly connected to the transfers.

At the time of reporting, Magic Eden had not released a statement confirming an exploit. Details such as the number of wallets involved, the potential vulnerability, and the total value of the moved NFTs remained undisclosed.

    Pseudonymous Account Claims White-Hat Operation

After Cirrus raised the alert, an X account using the pseudonym Quit claimed the transactions were part of a white-hat mission. According to Quit, assets held at wallet address 0x71cf3f5724bD2B72Ef6464992aCd26216DE7fe33 were safe and would be returned once no longer considered at risk.

Magic Eden has not verified the wallet’s connection to a legitimate white-hat effort or confirmed whether the transactions were part of an organized recovery operation.

Magic Eden Had Ended EVM Marketplace Support

The reported Ethereum NFT activity follows the company’s earlier shift away from its EVM marketplace. According to Magic Eden’s documentation, support for the EVM marketplace ended on March 9, 2026. Listings, bids, and offers on that marketplace were moved off-chain and became inaccessible after the shutdown.

Magic Eden continues to support Solana-based NFT trading. Its products also include Packs, which can contain NFTs from Ethereum collections; NFTs revealed through Packs can be traded on the marketplace.

Magic Eden has not disclosed how the September 25 activity affected its services or contracts associated with the former EVM marketplace.

  • Tesla Optimus Output Climbs to Hundreds Per Week as Hand Dexterity Remains a Bottleneck

Tesla Optimus Output Climbs to Hundreds Per Week as Hand Dexterity Remains a Bottleneck

Tesla has reportedly ramped up production of its Optimus humanoid robot to several hundred units per week, marking roughly a tenfold increase from the second quarter of 2026. The company is aiming for more than 1,000 robots per week by the end of the year, but manufacturing challenges around the robot’s complex hands and supply chain are still slowing the ramp.

    Optimus production surges

According to The Information, Tesla went from producing dozens of Optimus units weekly during Q2 2026 to several hundred units per week in recent weeks. That is a significant jump, though not yet the stable, high-volume output Tesla wants.

Tesla is working toward a production line capable of more than 1,000 Optimus robots per week by the end of 2026. Longer term, Elon Musk has discussed manufacturing around 20,000 robots per week.

Hands remain the hardest engineering challenge

One of the biggest obstacles is Optimus’ hand. The robot must perform precise, human-like movements, which requires a dense array of compact motors, actuators, sensors, and mechanical parts working together.

According to the report, Tesla is facing difficulties not only with hand manufacturing and assembly, but also with automated production equipment and supplier availability. The company continues to refine the hand design as it moves toward a production-ready version.

Producing these intricate components consistently at high volumes makes the challenge even greater. Tesla has previously noted that the hand and forearm system is one of the most difficult parts of Optimus to engineer.

    What’s next for Optimus

Tesla has not publicly confirmed an exact current weekly production figure, so the several-hundred-unit number remains a reported estimate rather than an official company count.

The company is also developing Optimus V3, which is expected to introduce hardware and design changes aimed at mass production. For now, Tesla’s immediate focus is on making its manufacturing process reliable enough to support far higher volumes.

  • Anthropic Inks $11.6 Billion Deal with Akamai to Boost AI Computing Infrastructure

Anthropic Inks $11.6 Billion Deal with Akamai to Boost AI Computing Infrastructure

Anthropic has signed a massive $11.6 billion, seven-year contract with Akamai Technologies to secure computing power for its artificial intelligence operations. The deal expands upon an earlier $1.8 billion computing agreement between the two companies.

Under the terms, Akamai will provide Anthropic with access to central processing units (CPUs), as demand for general-purpose chips continues to rise in data centers supporting AI services. The surge in usage of Anthropic’s Claude software, particularly for coding and other tasks, has driven the need for additional computing resources. The AI developer is also purchasing computing capacity from other major tech firms, including Alphabet’s Google and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

As part of the agreement, Akamai issued Anthropic a warrant allowing the AI company to purchase Series B shares at $111.33 each. The warrant converts into 7.7 million common shares. A portion of the warrant, representing about 2% of Akamai’s common stock, will vest alongside the computing agreement, which is expected to start in the second half of next year. The remaining portion will become available over the seven-year contract.

Akamai estimates that capital spending tied to this deal will total about $5.5 billion, more than six times last year’s spending. Most of the investment will go toward servers, chips, and networking equipment, with the bulk expected next year. Akamai CEO Tom Leighton noted that the company’s cloud business is “growing obviously extremely fast” and that revenue from cloud contracts could soon eclipse sales from other segments.

Revenue from the Anthropic business is expected to reach $150 million to $300 million next year, with an annual run rate of about $1.7 billion by 2028. Leighton described the warrant as a “serious step” that could bring the two companies closer together, marking the first time Akamai has agreed to such a warrant in a cloud deal.

The deal comes amid investor concerns over circular AI deals, where cloud, hardware, and AI companies buy each other’s products while also making direct investments. Nevertheless, Anthropic’s commitment underscores the intense competition for computing resources in the AI sector.

  • AI-Driven Export Boom Propels Taiwan’s Trade Surplus Toward $205.4 Billion

AI-Driven Export Boom Propels Taiwan’s Trade Surplus Toward $205.4 Billion

Taiwan’s central bank projects that the island’s trade surplus could reach a record $205.4 billion this year, fueled by a rapid expansion in artificial intelligence hardware manufacturing. This would be more than four times the $49.2 billion surplus recorded in 2018, when the US-China tariff dispute began.

Taiwan Emerges as Key AI Manufacturing Hub

The surge is closely tied to US efforts to build supply chains independent of China. Taiwan is becoming a critical node in the global AI supply chain, exporting servers and advanced semiconductors to the US while importing memory chips from South Korea and wafer fabrication equipment from Japan. Medium- and low-tech manufacturing is increasingly outsourced to ASEAN countries.

The US trade deficit is expected to exceed $1.1 trillion, with Taiwan projected to become its third-largest source at $219.2 billion, behind Vietnam ($238 billion) and Mexico ($221 billion), and ahead of China ($156.4 billion).

Electronics Manufacturing Shifts Away from China

Taiwan’s electronics industry is moving away from the old model of producing goods in China for US markets. Instead, Taiwan now focuses on high-value, tariffed, and cybersecurity-sensitive products, while lower-tech assembly moves to the US or ASEAN. The share of locally produced exports hit a record 52.9% last year, up from 47.6% in 2018, while China’s share fell to 26.2%, down from 46.9%.

Investment Flows Redirected to the US

Taiwanese investment in China is declining as companies reassess strategies amid higher costs and geopolitical risks. The cumulative direct investment ratio in China dropped from 58.3% in 2017 to 18.8% from 2018 onward. Meanwhile, the US has become Taiwan’s most important investment destination, with the ratio rising to 18.7%. In 2023 and 2024, investment directed to the US accounted for 36.4% and 29.1% respectively, highlighting a broader shift toward the US, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

These trends underscore Taiwan’s central role in the global AI supply chain and the ongoing realignment of manufacturing and investment flows away from China.

  • Qualcomm Unveils Agentic Smartphone Vision: On-Device AI to Automate Tasks Across Apps

Qualcomm Unveils Agentic Smartphone Vision: On-Device AI to Automate Tasks Across Apps

Qualcomm has unveiled its ambitious vision for the next generation of smartphones at the Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui. The company’s handset chief, Christopher Patrick, and premium mobile leader Dino Bekis introduced the concept of the ‘agentic smartphone’ — a device that acts as an intelligent assistant capable of understanding user intent and autonomously completing multi-step tasks across different applications.

For example, if someone emails you their contact details, instead of manually copying that information into your contacts app and forwarding it, the phone’s AI agent could handle the entire process automatically, only pausing to ask for your approval when necessary.

However, this level of automation raises significant privacy concerns. To function effectively, the AI needs access to personal data such as emails, photos, and app accounts. Qualcomm’s solution is to process as much of this data as possible on the device itself, minimizing reliance on cloud servers. Users would have clear control over permissions, able to grant or revoke access at any time.

The strategy is powered by Qualcomm’s newest processors: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Both chips feature the company’s Oryon CPU and Hexagon NPU, along with a low-power Sensing Hub that continuously monitors context without draining the battery. The Extreme version offers enhanced performance for graphics, camera, and video workloads.

Qualcomm is also collaborating with Liquid AI to develop a system that builds a user profile from device data (with permission), giving AI agents the context they need without constant cloud access. Heavier AI workloads will still be offloaded to the cloud, but the goal is to split tasks based on privacy, speed, and cost considerations.

While the chips are ready, the full realization of this vision depends on smartphone manufacturers and app developers building the necessary permission systems and app connections. Qualcomm has laid the foundation, but the ecosystem must catch up to make the agentic smartphone a reality in everyday life.

  • Flipkart Lists Google Fitbit Air at Rs. 13,999 Ahead of India Launch

Flipkart Lists Google Fitbit Air at Rs. 13,999 Ahead of India Launch

Google’s screen-free fitness tracker, the Fitbit Air, has appeared on Flipkart with a price tag of Rs. 13,999, signaling an imminent India launch. The listing, currently marked as “Coming Soon”, suggests the device could be available as early as October 2, according to a leak from tipster Sanju Choudhary.

The Flipkart listing aligns with earlier rumors that pegged the price between Rs. 12,999 and Rs. 13,999. Although Google has not confirmed the final price or exact launch date, the company has stated that the Fitbit Air will reach India in October.

Unlike traditional smartwatches, the Fitbit Air does away with a display entirely. Weighing just 12 grams, it operates discreetly in the background, tracking a wide range of health metrics including heart rate, SpO2, skin temperature, and movement. The data can be accessed later via the Google Health app.

The device automatically recognizes workouts and supports over 40 exercise modes. It also measures heart rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep stages, steps, calories burned, distance, and cardio load. Battery life is rated at up to seven days, with a five-minute charge sufficient for a full day of use. The tracker is water-resistant to 5 ATM, making it suitable for swimming, and connects to Android and iOS devices via Bluetooth Low Energy.

The Fitbit Air first went on sale globally in May at a starting price of $99.99. With its India launch approaching, Google aims to offer a simpler, screen-free option for health-conscious users who prefer not to wear a full smartwatch.

  • Magic Eden Investigates Mysterious Zero-ETH NFT Transfers: White-Hat Rescue Saves $5.7 Million

Magic Eden Investigates Mysterious Zero-ETH NFT Transfers: White-Hat Rescue Saves $5.7 Million

Magic Eden is investigating a series of unusual NFT transfers that saw thousands of assets change hands for zero ETH. While the activity initially sparked fears of a major hack, the truth turned out to be a coordinated white-hat rescue that saved over $5.7 million in digital assets.

On September 25, a user known as Trader Cirrus detected the anomaly. One wallet was pulling thousands of NFTs from hundreds of different accounts, with each transfer recorded as a sale on Magic Eden at a price of zero. Cirrus immediately advised users to revoke their NFT approvals as a precaution.

Researcher 0xQuit later clarified the situation. The transfers were not an attack but a rescue operation. A white-hat actor moved 3,832 NFTs from vulnerable wallets into a secure wallet before a malicious party could exploit them. The combined value of these NFTs exceeded $5.7 million.

The root cause of the vulnerability was traced to Limit Break’s Payment Processor V2, which had been used on Magic Eden’s former EVM marketplace. Although Magic Eden shut down that payment system in October 2024 and closed the EVM marketplace earlier this year, many users had never revoked the old permissions, leaving their assets exposed.

Magic Eden has confirmed that current listings on its platform are safe. However, anyone who used the marketplace between February and October 2024 is urged to check their wallet and revoke any old approvals on Ethereum, Polygon, and Base.

This incident serves as a reminder that permissions can persist long after a service is discontinued, and it is essential for users to proactively manage their approvals to protect their assets.
