YouTube Introduces PIN Lock for Profiles on TV App to Boost Privacy

YouTube is rolling out a new security feature for its TV app: a 4-digit Account Lock PIN. This update allows users to protect their profile, viewing history, and recommendations from others who share the same television.

How the Account Lock PIN Works

Once enabled, anyone attempting to access a locked profile must enter the four-digit code. This simple barrier prevents family members, roommates, or guests from viewing personal recommendations, search history, subscriptions, or recently watched videos. Users can still watch YouTube as a guest or use their own unlocked profile without affecting others’ experience.

Rollout and Availability

Google announced the feature on September 10, 2026, through an update to the official YouTube Help Center. The PIN lock will roll out to most smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles worldwide, though availability may vary by geographic region.

Setting Up the PIN

The setup process is straightforward. Open YouTube on a supported TV, select your profile, navigate to account settings, find the Account Lock option, and create a four-digit PIN. If you forget the code, you can sign in with your Google credentials via the “Forgot code?” option, which will disable the lock. You can then re-enable it if desired.

Why YouTube Added This Feature

Switching profiles on a shared TV does not always feel private. Recommendations, search history, and subscriptions can reveal personal interests. The new PIN adds a simple layer of security, especially useful in homes where parents and children share a TV, or when friends and guests use the same device.
