Google is rolling out a new feature designed to simplify account recovery while boosting security. The company now allows users to verify their identity by recording a short selfie video, making it easier to regain access to accounts when standard login methods fail.
The selfie video verification option appears only when Google requires additional proof of identity during the recovery process. To use the feature, users simply follow on-screen instructions—typically involving a series of head movements—and record a brief video. The video is then stored securely in the user’s Google Account, with full control over its deletion through account settings.
According to Google, a short video is significantly harder to fake than a static photo. While images can be easily copied, edited, or generated by AI tools, a video captures natural facial movements and multiple angles, making impersonation far more difficult. This added layer of security helps Google’s systems verify authenticity before granting account access.
The company emphasized that the video is encrypted during storage and can be deleted at any time. The feature is being rolled out gradually to eligible users, with no specific criteria announced—users should check their account settings to see if the option is available.
While no security measure is entirely foolproof, video verification represents a meaningful step forward in protecting user accounts from fraud. By combining ease of use with enhanced security, Google aims to reduce the frustration of account recovery while keeping bad actors at bay.
